Chevrolet Corvette gets more power for ‘08

The Chevy Corvette is about to become more powerful than ever thanks to a new 6.2-litre V8 that develops 430bhp and 424lb-ft of torque, mated to a new six-speed paddleshift transmission.

The fastest standard automatic Vette yet will do 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 190mph, and comes with the quicker-shifting gearbox and steering tweaked for improved feel at all speeds. The LS3 engine uses the modified valvetrain and high-flow cylinder heads, fuel injectors and intake manifolds already seen in the 7.0-litre Corvette Z06. An optional two-mode exhaust system lifts power to 436bhp and torque to 428lb-ft, and gives a more aggressive exhaust sound.

There’s a choice of three suspension set-ups, all reworked, and new Goodyear tyres. Magnetic Ride Control, an adaptive suspension set-up, remains optional, along with larger cross-drilled brakes. Revisions extend to a new instrument panel, an audio input jack and optional two-tone leather upholstery. And there’s a Z51 performance pack comprising firmer springs and dampers, bigger brakes, larger anti-roll bars and enhanced cooling.

US sales of the ‘08 Corvette will start towards the end of the summer, and European imports will follow. But if you’re after the ultimate Corvette, then it may be wise to hang on: spy photos are circulating of a model more powerful yet than the 198mph Z06. This version, originally dubbed the Blue Devil but now thought to take the SS badge, is expected to have a power output of over 600bhp as well as even more aggressive styling and a more track-orientated suspension set-up. Insiders suggest that it will be launched at the Detroit Motor Show next January.
